AI members had a run-in with DCC staff when they tried to meet with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofdunedin.com\/city\/?page=profiles_chin\">Mayor Peter (Wing Ho) Chin<\/a> yesterday.<a href=\"http:\/\/tv3.co.nz\/News\/NationalNews\/tabid\/184\/articleID\/24993\/Default.aspx#top\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a DCC worker and someone who supports Amnesty and human rights I am disappointed that Chin is be shying away from making any stand or comment. But politics is clearly an issue here as ties between Dunedin and China are very close, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofdunedin.com\/city\/?page=sc_shanghai\">Shanghai, China<\/a> having a meaningful relationship as a sister city of Dunedin. There is also the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofdunedin.com\/city\/?page=project_chinesegrdn\">Chinese Garden<\/a> development, which has central government support and involvement of Chinese experts.<\/p>\n<p>I recently read a review of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0670038253?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=r06c-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0670038253\">The China Fantasy: How Our Leaders Explain Away Chinese Repression<\/a>, the basic thesis of which on the face rings true. China does abuse human rights and we hear little from our leaders condemning China. Will NZ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsf.org\/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=174\">boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics<\/a> due to the human rights abuses in China?
